2017 POETRY SLAM HEATS BEGIN IN JUNE

The Australian Poetry Slam is a national competition for spoken word artists. Anyone can enter. In 2017, 50 heats will be held in towns, cities and suburbs hold slam heats, in state and territory of Australia. Cafe's, libraries, festivals, community halls, pubs and clubs host these events. Audiences award scores to each poet. The favourite poet from each heat is eligible to compete at a regional or state poetry slam final. The best from each state and territory travel to Sydney, to perform for a packed out audience at the National Final. The national slam champion wins prizes and professional gigs.

South Australian Poetry Slam State Final 2014

Well it all came down to the final at Goodwood Institute on Friday 19th September when ten slammers got up and strutted their stuff before a full house!!  Yep, that's right folks, we sold out the venue and it was a huge evening.  Congratulations to all our finalists but of course there can only be two that go to Sydney.  First place was taken out by 16 year old Amy Watson but for the first time we had a tie for second place and had to have a slam off! Wallis Prophet (who incidently tied for first in heat 5) and Roison Murphy-Haines got up and gave their all a second time with 17 year old Roisin getting the nod from our judges to join Amy in Sydney next month.  An amazing night, a great atmosphere and the future certainly looks bright with the kids stepping up to take out the prizes and a host of new faces coming to the heats.  Onwards and upwards.  Sydney town, are you ready?
