APS Youth - Northern Beaches Workshop

Learn how to write and perform spoken word with professional spoken word artist Andrew Cox. This is the perfect opportunity to hone your skills and gain confidence performing in front of your peers.

Andrew Cox is a proud Filipino/Australian, growing up in both these unique parts of the world. As an educator he facilitates writing workshops and extended programs, as a performer he has featured at festivals and major Australia wide competitions. 2018 saw the release of The Space Between the Words, Andrew’s first published collection of poetry. Andrew has performed at various prominent stages the likes of - the Art Gallery of NSW, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney Town Hall, The ICC, Parliament House Canberra.

Participants are encouraged to sign up to perform at our Northern Beaches heat at Manly Library on April 11.

APS Youth - Northern Beaches Heat

Check out the freshest young performing writers as they battle it out to become slam champion, hosted by professional spoken word artist Lorin Elizabeth.

Admission - Free | Slam registration - 5pm
Performers must be 12–18 years old.


Australian Poetry Slam Youth is the largest youth poetry slam in Sydney. Held annually by Word Travels, the program involves workshops and slams throughout Sydney, culminating in an explosive finale at Sydney Writers' Festival.

This year, Northern Beaches Council are holding a heat for all aspiring poets in the local area. Bringing rap performances, stories, monologues and poems to the stage, each performer has just two minutes to wow the crowd. No props, no music – just the performer, a microphone and the spotlight. Audience members vote for the top artists who will then go on to represent their suburb at the APS Youth - Sydney Final on May 4.

The top three scoring poets at the Sydney Final will receive a one-on-one recording workshop with Heaps Decent. Check out what they do here!

There will also be a workshop on how to write and perform spoken word, held at Warringah Mall on April 4.

Learn how to write and perform spoken word while honing your skills and gaining confidence performing in front of your peers. This workshop is hosted by 2018 NSW Poetry Slam Champion Pola Fanous.

Pola Fanous is a young poet & performing artist from Western Sydney. An Egyptian-born immigrant, at age 20 Pola is a prominent figure in Sydney's Slam scene, and has been published in 'The Resurrection' Anthology, the ARNA anthology, the USYD student anthology and in Honi Soit. Pola has performed his poetry Australia-wide, at events such as the Digital Writers' Festival, The Plot Festival, the BPS Grand Slam & the Parliament House of Australia. He recently competed in the 2018 Australian Poetry Slam National Final and was appointed 2018 NSW Slam Champion.

APS Youth - Sydney Final at SWF

As part of Sydney Writer’s Festival, Australian Poetry Slam Youth hosts the best young wordsmiths from all around Sydney battle it out for the title of 2019 APS Youth Sydney Champion.

Young poets are voted by audiences from slams in Northern Beaches, Casula and Fairfield to converge on the APS Youth - Sydney Final stage.

Spitting stories, monologues, raps, rants and poems on stage, each performer has just two minutes to wow the crowd. No props, costumes or music – just a young writer sharing their raw truth to an audience of clicking fingers.

Hosted by NSW Poetry Slam Champion Pola Fanous and featuring 2018 Rumble Youth Slam Champion Helen Latukefu.

The champion of the night will feature at the 2019 APS National Final at Sydney Opera House, and the top three scoring poets will receive a one-on-one session with HEAPS DECENT, a collective of Australian songwriters, musicians and producers, to workshop ideas for their own lyrics and music.
