Armidale Slam Heat, NSW

The Armidale slam heat was held at the Armidale Dumaresq Council War Memorial Library in the afternoon of Saturday, 18th September.
A small turnout quickly expanded as people were drawn in by host, Tug Dumbly's opening performance and at the end of the event, Armidale had two young confident, keen poetry lovers as the winner and runner up! An excellent result! We look forward to seeing both the winner, 13 year old, Aerion Glavac-Skinner and runner up, 14 year old, Lisa Evered at the NSW State Final in November.

Runner up, Lisa Evered has kindly sent us a copy of her poem, which she performed.

Lisa also gave us some insight into her thoughts on poetry and the slam experience.

APS: Did you enjoy the poetry slam heat and why?
LE: Yes I did because I enjoy drama and performing and writing poetry.

APS: How did you feel performing your own poem on stage, in front of an audience?
LE: It feels more real performing your own poem than performing a poem someone else has written.

APS: What do you enjoy about poetry?
LE: Rhyming words.

APS: Do you have a favourite style of poetry or favourite poet?
LE: I like ballads that tell a story and poems that paint a picture in your mind.

APS: Do you think it is important for Australians to write their own poetry and why?
LE: I think that poeple should express their feelings and a poem is a good way to do this.

APS: Are you excited about performing at the NSW State Final?
LE: Yes.

APS: Is there something in particular which you are looking forward to at the State Final?
LE: I have never been to Sydney before and I love performing.
