Slammin' @ Off the Page

To get into the Darwin heat of the National Poetry Slam, you have traditionally had to get your bag scanned by officials and be checked out with a metal detector. After all, the Territory is a pretty wild place. You never know what might happen. Especially when poets are involved.

This year, however, is different. The NT Library (located within Parliament House - hence the uber security), who have done a fantastic job running the Darwin heat for some years now, have handed the gig over to the NT Writers’ Centre. And we’re excited.

Four or five times a year NT Writers’ Centre runs a spoken word event called Off the Page, and open mic is a popular feature of those evenings. So, we decided to give the September Off the Page over to Slam, just Slam, nothing but Slam. And we decided to take it to one of the funkiest venues in town – Happy Yess.

After the Slam, hang around for the music. Seldom Party will offer up some haunting melodramatic folk – I’m listening as I write, and I just can’t wait. You can check Seldom Party out here: http://www.triplejunearthed.com/SeldomParty

So, Darwinites, get those pens out. Get writing. Rehearse your words in front of the mirror, in front of your mates, in front of the cat. Hell, we don’t care, just do it. And when you’re ready, give us a call, or drop us a line. You don’t want to miss out on your chance to represent Darwin in the National Finals, and if the popularity of open mic at Off the Page is anything to go by, there’ll be lots of interest, and some pretty tough competition.
